What to do with compost?

1. Make your own potting soil. Use a recipe of 1/3 compost; 1/3 soil or sand; 1/3 vermiculite.

2. Dig compost into your vegetable garden and spread it 5cm thick around perennials.

3. Aerate your lawn and rake 4cm of compost over the surface.

4. Place compost around the base of plant, trees and shrubs.

5. Make compost tea: a liquid solution or suspension made by steeping compost in water. It can be used as a liquid fertilizer and to prevent plant diseases. The liquid is applied as a spray to non-edible plant parts, or as a soil-drench (root dip) to reduce incidence of harmful fungi and bacteria.

6. Use it as a mulch to prevent weed growth, soil erosion and moisture loss from the soil.
